Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 22, 2022

July 22, 2022 at 3:14 pm • By Anonymous

Horse by Horse News

  • It is Haskell Eve and a large number of Group 81 Members and Kenwood partners are patiently awaiting the debut of Easy as A.B.C. in tomorrow’s 2nd race at Monmouth Park.  He gets the 2 post with Paco Lopez aboard in a solid field of 8 going five and a half furlongs on the main track.  We are hoping for a good trip and a solid effort for him to begin his Kenwood Racing career.  Good luck to all Group 81 members and trainer Kelly Breen.
  • Tetragrammaton ran an admirable race on Tuesday at Parx finishing 2nd   by ½ length after tiring a bit in deep stretch. He has been a nice asset for our ARC 22 Group and we expect more good things from him in the future.
  • U Kant Whip It is excellent after his big win on July 4th and there is a possible entry for him next Friday July 29th at Monmouth Park.  We will know late on Sunday if the race goes and update then.
  • Torn Jeans is doing fine after her last race and there are possible entries for her on August 5th and 12th at Monmouth Park.  We will keep you updated as to her status.
  • Life On the Edge is doing well with trainer Mark Salvaggio at Penn National and there is a possible entry for her on August 12th.
  • Fire's Finale and Catania are both fine out of their races and we are currently looking for races for them in August.
  • Ellie's a Riot and Without a Net are both set to return to Monmouth Park in the next few days to resume training with Kelly Breen after a brief rest at Overbrook Farm.
  • Lisa Limon and her 2 foals are all well at Hidden Brook Farm.  Lisa Limon was bred to Connect on Monday April 18th showing that all are well.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 9, 2022

July 18, 2022 at 8:29 am • By Anonymous

Horse by Horse News

  • It was an exciting July 4th for Kenwood Racing, as U Kant Whip It broke his maiden at Monmouth Park in his 3yo debut! There was a large group of Kenwood friends and family there to celebrate the victory, and congratulations to Group 67 members!
  • Kenwood Racing is right back in action today with new ARC 2022 claim, Torn Jeans, running in Race 7 at Monmouth Park, making her Kenwood Racing debut in the turf sprint. She will get Albin Jimenez in the saddle, who won for Kenwood on U Kant Whip it, and will break from post position #3, at 6-1 ML odds. Torn Jeans has won on both turf and dirt, and will run today rain or shine, as we look to keep the momentum going. Good luck to our ARC 2022 group, and please let us know if you plan to be at Monmouth today!
  • Kenwood Racing’s 2020 PA Bred 2yo Champion, Fire's Finale, is entered to run on Tuesday at Parx, in Race 9, a 7 furlong PA Bred Allowance Optional Claiming Event.  Top jockey Paco Lopez is taking the trip over to Parx for the mount, and we are excited to have Fire’s Finale back in the starting gate. Similar to U Kant Whip It’s preparation for his return, we have been patient with getting FF back to the races this Summer, after a winless 3yo campaign that included a Stakes placing right at Parx. Good luck to all Group 56 members, and it’s looking like we should have some of the Kenwood family in attendance at Parx, so please let us know if you’ll be able to join.
  • We are targeting a race July 22nd for Tetragrammaton at Monmouth Park, and ARC 2022’s other new runner, CATANIA, is patiently waiting for a race that fits her conditions! We are hopeful that her versatility as dual surface winner, both long and short, with help give us some options in the upcoming overnights. Remember, new claims at a specific racetrack are in “claiming jail”, meaning they can only runback at the track they were claimed out of; typically for the remainder of that race meet.
  • Our 2yo Arrogate colt, Easy as A.B.C., had another strong workout midweek, clocking in at 47.80 for the 4f work. Kelly Breen had his rider “ask” for a bit more during the workout, and ABC responded well, clocking his fastest 4f breeze.  Kelly is non-committal at this point for a debut race, but there are some upcoming 2yo Maiden Special Weight races that are in play if he can continue to progress the next week or two.  He received his Gate Card last week, so at this point, he is eligible to be entered.

As always, you can checkout our website for upcoming entries, or potential entries, for each horse.  Please let us know if you plan to be at Monmouth Park today for Torn Jeans race (or any day, for that matter), as we always enjoy sharing these moments at the track with the Kenwood Family!  Regardless of your involvement with a specific horse, or even if Kenwood Racing doesn’t have a runner, we’ll do what we can to help provide a VIP experience for everyone!

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 2, 2022

July 3, 2022 at 7:58 am • By Anonymous

Horse by Horse News

  • With Kenwood Racing entries starting to pick up again, we are excited to have U Kant Whip It back in the starting gate this weekend on July 4th, making his 3yo debut in Race 5 at Monmouth Park. He gets Monmouth Park veteran jockey, Joe Bravo in the saddle for his comeback, and U Kant Whip It has been training well and consistently since we got him back to Kelly Breen once Monmouth Park opened in early May.  Good luck to all Group 67 members, and partner Ralph Pastore! Please let us know if you plan to be in attendance on Monday, so we can plan accordingly.
  • Life On the Edge is doing great out of her 4th place finish two weeks ago at Penn National, and is entered right back at Penn on Wednesday night, running in a 1 Mile turf race, with Jockey Anthony Salgado in the irons. Life On The Edge looks to become a winner at ages 2,3,4 and (hopefully) now 5! Good luck to all Group 50 members!
  • Unfortunately a race didn’t go this week for Fire's Finale at Parx, for July 4th, but he continues to do well as we look for the right spot to make his 4yo comeback.  There is a PA Bred Allowance race that he fits in about two weeks at Parx, but we will also continue to monitor the Overnights with the hope of finding a race sooner.
  • One of the new claims for our ARC 2022 group, Torn Jeans, has an upcoming race entry next week for Saturday July 9th, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that the turf race goes, AND the weather stays dry!
  • We also expect to find a race for our other new ARC 2022 claim, the dual surface winner Catania, in the upcoming Monmouth Park Overnights, to keep the Kenwood Racing entries going.
  • Our new 2yo colt by Arrogate, Easy as A.B.C., had another breeze from the starting gate this week, and earned his Gate Card in the process, while also stretching out to his first 5f workout. An exciting step in any young thoroughbred’s progress in getting to the races, a gate card is required for every unraced horse (regardless of age), and is given by the track Starter who monitors all of these horses in and around the starting gate during these workouts.  Easy As A.B.C. has demonstrated over the course of the last month that he can safely load and stand in a starting gate, while also breaking cleanly and in a straight line. That doesn’t guarantee it will happen every time(!), but it’s a critical step in their training process. No specific target date just yet, but exciting progress to report.

You can always find all our horses latest entry updates right on our website, https://www.kenwoodracing.com/statistics/entries. We hope everyone has a happy, healthy and safe July 4th weekend, and please let us know if you plan to be at Monmouth Park at any point this weekend to join us for live racing!

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for June 25, 2022

June 27, 2022 at 8:02 am • By Anonymous

Horse by Horse News

  • After what has seemed like a slow month with limited Kenwood Racing entries and runners, we are looking forward to what will hopefully be an action-packed few weeks of Kenwood Racing entries - starting with Life On the Edge’s 4th Place finish last night from Penn National, and followed up by Tetragrammaton today in Race 9, right from Monmouth Park, getting veteran jockey Albin Jimenez in the irons - Good luck to our Active Racing Club, ARC 2022, in today’s race!
  • U Kant Whip It continues to do well in the mornings, and breezed again on Wednesday as we point to his 3yo debut on Monday, July 4th, right at Monmouth Park! Entry is only next Friday, July 1st, so we’ll be sure to keep you updated. Please let us know if you are around that weekend and interested in coming to the races one day, so we can start to plan accordingly for the holiday weekend.
  • Fire's Finale is finally ready for a race after a strong 6-8 weeks of preparation to get back into racing form, and Kelly Breen likes what he has been seeing from our former 2yo PA Bred Champion of 2020 in the mornings. He will be breezing this weekend to continue his fitness, as we look for the first available race that fits his conditions at the local tracks. In an ideal world, we get a PA Bred sprint in one of the Overnights at Parx, but we aren’t going to wait to for that with a horse that is ready to run.  We will keep you posted as soon as we see something come up.
  • ARC 2022’s new claims, Torn Jeans and Catania, are both doing well out of their races are we will be targeting races for both of them within the next couple weeks as well. Both veteran fillies are dual surface winners, both long and short, so we will have plenty of options within the Condition Book and Overnights. Since both horses were claimed during the Monmouth Park meet, they will be running at Monmouth Park the rest of the meet, providing plenty of action for ARC 2022 and the entire Kenwood Racing family!
  • Easy as A.B.C., our 2yo colt by Arrogate, continues to do everything Kelly asks of him so far. He has now had back-to-back breezes from the gate, working towards his gate card, after he breezed 4f this past Wednesday in 48.20, for the fastest time of 13 horses to work that distance on Wednesday.  While the ‘bullet breeze’ certainly doesn’t mean much here, it is interesting to note that ABC worked in company from the gate with another 2yo from Kelly’s barn who ended up with same 48.20 work time. While ABC’s workout was labeled “Breezing” - meaning he did it within himself with no urging from the rider; the other 2yo’s workout was labeled “Handily” - meaning he had constant hand urging from the rider to keep pace. Again, doesn’t mean much at this point, but it is an interesting note, and a sign that Easy as A.B.C. is moving in the right direction.

Our team is now in Timonium, Maryland evaluating horses for the Fasig-Tipton two year old Sale to be held on Monday and Tuesday May 23-24.  We expect it to be very competitive, as has been the case for the last few years. It will likely be the last chance for those of you who are interested in purchasing a share in a two year old Horse Group this year, as we intend to purchase horses to add to the stable, but only if we can get them at a reasonable price without compromising our standards. Please let us know if you want to be included in receiving additional information about any purchases, as we already have a large priority list and expect any new groups to sell out rapidly.  In addition, all current and former Group Members please keep the morning of Saturday May 28th open as we are planning a get together and a chance to see your horses in person at Monmouth Park.  Details to follow next week.

Horse by Horse News

  • Fire's Finale, Tetragrammaton and U Kant Whip It all had excellent works last week. There is a possible race for Tetragrammaton on Saturday May 28th and we will be looking for races for the other two in the next couple of week as they round into shape after their time on the farm.
  • Warn is training well and we are looking for a race for him in early June, as the race did not go for the 22nd.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for May 14, 2022

General News

We are diligently preparing for the Fasig-Tipton 2 Year Old Sale to be held May 23-24 in Timonium, Maryland.  It will likely be the last chance for those of you who are interested in purchasing a share in a two year old horse Group this year.  We intend to purchase horses to add to the stable, but only if we can get them at a reasonable price and maybe strike gold like the Derby winner Rich Strike (see some comments from Robb below in red).  Please let us know if you want to be included in receiving additional information about the sale, as we already have many on our priority list and expect any purchases to sell out rapidly.  In addition, all current and former Group Members please keep the morning of Saturday May 28th open as we are planning a get together and a chance to see your horses in person at Monmouth Park.  Details to follow next week.

A HUGE congratulations to all the connections of Rich Strike, how wonderful to see ‘little guys’ take home one of the greatest prizes in racing. A few ‘teachable moments’ from this shocking upset’…

  1. This horse was claimed last September for $30,000 (from famed owner Calumet Farm). If ever you wanted proof of something I’ve been saying for literally decades, that you can get ANY kind of horse out of a claiming race, this is it. It wasn’t the first time a horse that ran for a claiming tag earlier in its career won the Kentucky Derby and it won’t be the last. Horses change dramatically, especially from age 2 to 3, champion two year olds frequently fail to hold their form at three, while average two year olds mature into champions.
  2. It doesn’t happen every day, but you don’t need to spend a fortune for royally bred horses at public auction to win the biggest races. Is Rich Strike the best three year old this year? Time will tell, probably not, but he’s proof winners of grade one stakes come from everywhere.
  3. If ever the saying ‘pace makes the race’ proved true, this was it. The early pace was absolutely insane, faster than champion Jackie’s Warrior ran in a 7 furlong sprint two races earlier. The race was set up for a deep closer from far off the pace with a clean trip.
  4. Can’t say I would have picked this horse in a million years, but note he broke his maiden at Churchill by 17 lengths last September. ‘Horses for courses’ is a vastly underrated handicapping tool, note how many races today were won by horses with previous wins at Churchill Downs.
  5. Whether it’s claiming, or buying moderately priced horses at sales, you can end up with incredible results without spending millions of dollars. That’s exactly what makes this game so great!

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 29, 2022

General News

A lot of good news as we are looking forward to opening day at Monmouth Park, which is just 1 week away. The notorious no whipping rule has been amended to the new standard that will be in effect across the country beginning July 1 and Fixed Odds betting will begin at the racetrack only on Saturday May 7th opening day as well as Kentucky Derby Day.   Hopefully many of you can make it to kick off the new season.

Horse by Horse News

  • This afternoon Tetragrammaton finished a close 2nd at Gulfstream Park.  Please read Scott’s race recap below.

It was another exciting finish for Tetragrammaton today in another step up in class against older horses, just getting beat by ¾ length in the final strides before the wire!  He showed his typical gate speed breaking for the early lead and found himself in a speed dual on the backstretch with a horse he easily ‘put away’ at the top of the stretch; only to get in the last 50 yards by a late charging closer.  It was another nice effort from Tetra, and with no claims out of the race, we are excited to get him to Monmouth Park!  We already have a van ride lined up for him this Sunday to come up to NJ and join the rest of Kelly’s stable at Monmouth Park, and we’ll keep you posted on next races as our attention turns to the Northeast.

ARC 2022 had a very nice start to our year down at Gulfstream Park, posting a final record of 2-1-2 in just 7 starts – a 28%+ WIN percentage, and a 71%+ ITM percentage!  It’s just a small sample size to date, but we are eager to keep building on these numbers as we move north and look for our next claims.

  • Life On the Edge is doing well training with Mark Salvaggio at Penn National. She had a final breeze last Saturday in preparation for a turf race on May 7th at Penn National. She was entered today and please see Scott’s race announcement below.

Exciting entry news for Life On The Edge’s return to turf racing, as she is entered in Race 6 at Penn National next Saturday afternoon, May 7th (Kentucky Derby day!).  LOTE has been doing great since getting back into Mark’s barn after a brief freshening at the farm, and is ready for this return to grass. A field of eight entries, we are expecting a big effort from her with jockey Angel Rodriguez named to the mount. All we need is a little luck with the weather to make sure it stays on the turf!  Below is snippet from the Final Entry, via Equibase.

Life On the Edge (5-Year-Old Mare)
Date: April 25, 2022
Track: PENN NATIONAL
Distance: Four Furlongs
Time: 50:80 Breezing
Track Condition: Fast
Surface: Dirt
Rank: 4/6

  • Lisa Limon and her 2 foals are all well at Hidden Brook Farm.  See picture of Lisa Limon and her Vino Rosso foal above and the report below from Sergio at Hidden Brook as she was bred to Connect on Monday April 18th.  Let’s hope all goes well and she will be in foal again this spring.
