Results, big win, another entry

• First up No Good Deed broke like a shot and went right to the lead at Gulfstream Park, led to the stretch and stopped to a walk to finish 8^th of 12 horses. It was an improvement from her debut when she broke slowly, made a move and then tired but in both races she ran out of steam late. The rider after the race said she did everything right but he felt she handled the turf in her debut better than the dirt today. Given that info. our plan is to try her back on grass next time at Gulfstream. With this one under her belt she should be dead fit for that and have no excuses next time. Usually horses who have natural speed like she’s shown are able to win races at the right level, so we have reason to expect some trips to the winner’s circle with her this year if she stays sound and keeps trying as she has so far.

• Next up was Solar who came into this race primed and loaded for a big effort dropping into a softer spot and he did not disappoint, sitting a perfect trip just off the early speed under an outstanding ride by jockey Jaramillo Emisael, taking over the lead at the 1/8^th pole and drawing away to win by just under 2 lengths with the bulk of the field far behind the top two runners. To our surprise he was not claimed out of the race, a bonus. We had placed him in a winning spot which at Gulfstream Park usually means the horse is claimed and while that’s part of the game and would have been no problem, obviously off this impressive effort we’re happy to have another shot with him. A happy group of Kenwood owners celebrated Solar’s victory in the winner’s circle including Tony & Gloria Varano, Allen & Beth Katz and Paul Callahan. Congratulations to all the owners of this nice horse, who had posted a 2^nd and two 3rds in six starts since claiming him about 6 months ago at Monmouth Park and broke through with an overdue win today after a couple of rough trips. Our active racing group, which is almost sold out now, will be claiming horses much like Solar at Gulfstream and Monmouth as well as looking for private purchases to run all season long at the Monmouth Park meet this year.

• In entry news Night of Idiots runs tomorrow at Golden Gate Fields in an 11 horse field; everyone entered when a race finally went. It’s been a real problem at Golden Gate getting a race to go for her because several days of racing were cancelled this week, this is not the ideal spot but she fits well here so we are hoping for another top effort to follow up Solar today.
• And Giuliana Vee gets in next week at Penn National on short rest. She was fine out of her race at Penn National, schooled in the gate this week after breaking slowly and sloppily her last couple of starts, did well and was approved to run. While back on short rest it’s a weak field at the right distance; trainer Mark Salvaggio feels she is doing well and didn’t want to pass this one up.
• Take a look at the below photos of our beautiful 2yo out of Exchanging Fire for group #56 training at T-Square stud in Ocala. In this case the photos really do speak louder than words. He’s doing absolutely super; looks wonderful, all systems go. Plans are to ship into Monmouth at the end of April to Kelly Breen’s and continue his training there.

It’s been a real problem at Golden Gate getting a race to go for her because several days of racing were cancelled this week, she’s ready to run as soon as we can find any suitable spot for her.
• Solar training really well at Palm Meadows. He was entered today for Saturday at Gulfstream Park and the race went. Full field as usual, but good to have him in the entries.
• No Good Deed had a very nice day of training this morning at Gulfstream, you can see the video here and photos attached. She was entered today for Saturday at Gulfstream and her race went too, so we’ll have two horses in at Gulfstream Saturday for an exciting day of racing.

• Giuliana Vee acted up horribly in the gate at Penn National, broke flatfooted between horses and lost all chance at the start tonight, finishing 5^th and showing none of her true ability. The gate crew wants to have her school again in the gate before her next start, a sensible move. She was a little edgy in the gate last time too, if we can work with her to address this it will help her be a better horse. Seems ok out of the race.
• Night of Idiots good, races did not go for her this week at Golden Gate Fields. Here’s a video of her work yesterday, doing great, just wanting for a race for her.

• Solar good, there’s a race for him Feb. 7^th to enter in tomorrow at Gulfstream Park.

• No luck at all with either horse today, with no excuses for either one. First, Rapstorerocks got a fine trip from the #1 post with top rider Luis Saez and plain didn’t fire, finishing 7^th of 9 horses, with no excuse. Sat a comfortable trip in 3^rd much of the way and just didn’t have any kick when asked for run. After a good race in NY this fall has tossed in two straight clunkers at Gulfstream Park. 
• Then New Found Treasure sat a fine stalking trip at Penn National, moved up to 3^rd on the first turn with dead aim on the leaders and flattened out to finish 5^th. This filly has had a win and four thirds in nine starts for us and always tries hard. Just got tired late.
• Giuliana Vee runs February 1^st at Penn National and is doing really well.
• Night of Idiots good, enter tomorrow for Feb. 2^nd at Golden Gate Fields.
• Solar good, there’s a race for him Feb. 7^th to enter in at Gulfstream.

4th and claimed, new entries

Bullion was an honest 4^th today at Oaklawn Park. Broke perfectly, had a dream trip outside of 2 battling horses and just couldn’t sustain his bid while trying hard the entire way. It was a contentious 12 horse field and he never gave up, so not a bad effort, but that said he was favored in here and we had expected a better finish so not a bad thing at all to see him claimed from us as expected.

Finally, you’ve heard-read us on many occasions criticize our industry for not putting the welfare of horses and owners first. That said, some of racing’s harshest critics (many of whom are well-intended) are grossly misinformed about basic facts pertaining to the lives-lifecycles of horses. Injuries-deaths at a racetrack, as sad and painful as they are, do not exist in a vacuum. The fact is in the wild the percentage of injuries-deaths are MUCH higher than at a racetrack, a training center, a farm, or almost anywhere else under human care. To understand why race horses get injured and are euthanized you need to understand the physical makeup of horses in general. There is little difference between a race horse taking a bad step on the track and a horse in a pasture or in the wild taking a bad step. The result is the same. According to the BLM (Federal Bureau of Land Management), 50% of wild horses do not make it to year one. Another 25% don't live to year two. In other words, in the wild 75% of all horses die, most from illness and injuries, before their 2^nd birthday. So when people outside the gates of Santa Anita hold up signs saying “one death is too many”, it’s frankly total nonsense from people who do not understand that nature of this magnificent, but highly fragile breed. None of which is to absolve our industry of the responsibility of putting the welfare of the horses first and foremost, but no matter what anyone does, horses are going by their nature to get injured and die frequently; in the wild, on the farm and yes, at the racetrack.

• No Good Deed made her career debut today at Gulfstream Park, broke slowly which put her well back early, made a nice run on the far turn to gain contention, then tired in deep stretch to finish 8^th of 12 horses. She got a nice clean trip after the break, no excuses, not a great debut but actually not a horrible one either. These races at Gulfstream are always quite contentious and she should benefit from the experience. If she moves forward in her next start we should be ok.
