Fine effort, nice horse

• An absolutely huge Kenwood Racing debut for Solar today, a very good 2^nd at Monmouth Park, beaten by a nice horse from Belmont and well ahead of the rest of the field. Moving from maiden $20,000 (the race we claimed him from last time) to winner’s $40,000 (one of the toughest moves you can do); he showed himself to be a real bargain buy with his race today. We said coming into this he hadn’t taken a bad step since claiming him last month and we were confident he was sitting on a big debut effort and he gave us just that. Obviously would have loved to get the win here but have to be very pleased indeed with this. A horse with a future purchased at a value price. Worth noting our old friend Federal Dominance was in the same race as Solar today; claimed away from us for $30,000 last time out he sat right next to Solar for the first part of the race and faded badly, finishing a well beaten 7^th. Very very rarely do horses claimed from us do better for their new owners. Claiming is a tough thing for many owners to wrap their heads around (understandably), but the key to success is running in the right spots. When a horse is claimed from us, it’s usually well sold.

• ShimmyShimmy Shake and New Found Treasure both good out of their races yesterday. Both should run back at Monmouth Park in August.   

1 for 2....

• Shimmyshimmy Shake started off the day with a 5^th in a 10 horse field at Monmouth Park. She was sent to the lead, battled with the heavy favorite, and tired late. Unlike her previous two starts for us, she tried hard here against a solid field in a race run in a fast time for the level. If she can repeat this effort against slightly softer company, she has a shot to get to the winner’s circle next time.
• New Found Treasure ran hard and well today to finish a close 3^rd, a monstrous improvement off the day we claimed her two weeks ago when she was 11^th, beaten over 20 lengths with no obvious excuse. She came out of it sound and trainer Kelly Breen opted to run her back on short rest here and she fired a big race, sitting well back on the rail and making a big run on the far turn. Had she not been in tight at a couple of key points on the turn and at the top of the stretch, she’d have been even closer, but it was a fine effort nonetheless.

Not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. He’s ready and looks like he’s sitting on a big debut effort for us, which would make for a very nice weekend overall.
• Works (below) for our California horses; Magic Musketier and More Ice breezed at Los Alamitos and Starring John Wain breezed at Del Mar.  We’re going to pass the sprint July 31^st at Del Mar for Starring John Wain in favor of a similar race going 1 mile in a couple of weeks at Del Mar. All three doing super, as is Annie's Candy in northern California, who should run next month at his favorite track, Golden Gate Fields.
• All horses from morning training at Monmouth Park came out of their works well. Start a Fire good out of first (easy) timed work as he approaches his debut, Life On the Edge  well after breezing quickly in company as she approaches her 2^nd career start, and newly named Smarty Cat (Overanalyze group #53) and Rapstorerocks (Red Rocks group #54) worked fast and well together as they approach their debuts and came back good.  A lot of action ahead with our two year old crop! All works below, trainer Kelly Breen continues to be pleased at the progress all of these horses are making.
• Exchanging Ember doing fine since returning to training at Penn National last week, fingers crossed for a return to the races next month. She’s expected to breeze early this week @Penn National.

New entry and lots of good works

Two entries for Saturday at Monmouth and now another for Sunday as Solar finally gets in, plus a lot of big works today at Monmouth Park with your two year olds, here’s the latest news…

• Fifth time was the charm as Solar finally gets in this Sunday at Monmouth Park after four previous entries. He’s in the first race of the day in an 8 horse field. Not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. He’s ready and looks like he’s sitting on a big debut effort for us.

• ShimmyShimmy Shake & New Found Treasure both run Saturday for groups #47 & #54 respectively.  Both training nicely for this, both get big fields to navigate.

• Morning training was a real success at Monmouth Park this morning. Jack Czajkowski hosted a select group of Kenwood owners who watched Start A Fire have his first (easy) timed work as he approaches his debut, Life On the Edge breeze quickly in company as she approaches her 2^nd career start, and newly named Smarty Cat (Overanalyze group #53) and Rapstorerocks (Red Rocks group #54) work fast and well together as they approach their debuts.  A lot of action ahead with our two year old crop! • Annie’s Candy run a huge race at Sacramento this evening from last with a rush in the stretch to finish 2^nd, beaten ¾ of a length for the win. A few steps after the wire he was in front, another fine effort for this super-consistent runner. Will run back at Santa Rosa in August and then back to Golden Gate where he has a truly incredible record.
• Bullion had a nice easy breeze at Churchill Downs (below) after joining trainer Steve Asmussen’s string there. Steve reports he’s in good shape and he will be looking to get him in the entries shortly.
• Exchanging Ember doing fine since retuning to training at Penn National last week, fingers crossed for a return to the races next month. Here is a  photo of her training at Penn National over the weekend (she’s the horse in front, not a great photo but you can see she’s training towards a start now).

• Solar doing super, not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. He’ll be entered this Wednesday for next weekend.  He’s ready and looks like he’s sitting on a big debut effort for us.
• Our most recent addition to the Kenwood family, New Found Treasure is doing very well, claimed for Kenwood and group #54. With the Red Rocks (IRE) colt, now named Rapstorerocks in group #54 doing super, should be a lot of fun this summer

entry, Haskell, and more

• The Haskell is still scheduled for tomorrow (Sat.) but with extreme heat cancelling racing up and down the east coast, check for any last minute announcements on the Monmouth Park website about changes-cancellations. Anyone who has a reserved seat-tickets with Kenwood kindly let us know if you have any change of plans. Looks like an absolutely great day of racing on tap.
• Annie’s Candy runs Sunday at Sacramento, a short field, probably not his favorite surface but still looks tough in here.
• ShimmyShimmy Shake well, looking for a race for her too at Monmouth Park, maybe Friday.
• More Ice “100% sound, looks perfect” out of his race according to trainer Dan Ward. We are looking at an allowance event in August for his next start assuming all continues to go well. In fairness he’s also been in training for over a year without any time off so maybe he’d benefit from a little freshening too after that.  

All others well, more to follow.

• More Ice was 9^th of 12 horses in the Oceanside Stakes opening day today at Del Mar. Obviously a big field and of course a tough group but he had no excuse as he was next to the favorite and eventual winner at the back of the pack for most of the race and simply didn’t fire the way the other horse did when asked for run.  He passed several horses late and was beaten 7 lengths for the win in a blanket finish, as the chart put it just “outkicked”. He’s a nice horse but just a cut below this level, plain & simple. In fairness he’s also been in training for over a year without any time off so maybe he’d benefit from a little freshening too.
• Here’s a great video of our lovely Overanalyze filly (group #53) and newly named Rapstorerocks (Red Rocks (IRE) colt group #54) breezing together from the gate Monday morning at Monmouth. Both are doing really well, both look to be on track to make their debuts next month and just FYI, both groups are nearly sold out now (thank you!)

• Shake It Up Baby plain failed to fire at any point in the race today at Monmouth PArk, finishing a dull 6^th. Unlike Life On the Edge who showed a ton of speed and stopped with a big excuse, he showed nothing. Came into the race looking and doing absolutely great, showing a ton of speed and ability from the get go in all his works, so an obvious disappointment. Some horses need a race or two to show their best, one race is no reason to panic but that said, if he doesn’t run much better next time then we have cause for concern. Trainer Kelly Breen said after the race “this horse simply shows too much ability not to be a nice horse”, let’s hope he’s right.
• Also today we welcomed New Found Treasure to the stable, claimed today at Monmouth Park for Kenwood and group #54. Didn’t run great but most important, came out of the race totally fine so far.  With the Red Rocks (IRE) colt in group #54 doing super, should be a lot of fun this summer
• More Ice gets post #7 in a full 12 horse field in the Oceanside Stakes opening day, next Wednesday at Del Mar. While a big field and of course a tough group, he has two wins at Del Mar and has trained very well for this. As ready as we can get him!  All owners wishing to attend please let us know if you want assistance with admissions-seating.

update, morning training opportunity, please review!

• Life On the Edge came out flying, battled for the lead, then stopped suddenly turning for home and the rider did not push her after that. We naturally were concerned, as anyone who saw the race would be, but it turned out she had “the thumps” when she returned to the barn, a very obvious reason for stopping and totally treatable. It’s generally a reaction to Lasix, not that uncommon the first time they get treated with it for a race. Usually it’s just a matter of less Lasix next time, it’s rarely a long-term issue. The horse can continue to train, no time off, and run back in a few weeks barring something unforeseen. To quote trainer Kelly Breen “Valedictorian (his multiple stakes winning filly) had it, it’s very manageable. I bet her (Life On the Edge), I was stunned when she stopped like that, but it’s very treatable”. She showed a ton of speed and talent, battling head to head for the lead in a fast pace for most of the race. With the speed she showed today she should be tough to beat with this resolved and a race under her belt next time out.
• Tomorrow is the debut of Shake It Up Baby.  Been showing a ton of speed and ability from the get go, excellent final work July 1^st. . There are a couple in here who have the advantage of a race under their belt, first start usually not a horse’s best, but that said he’s doing super and we are expecting him to run very well.
