General News

We are diligently preparing for the Fasig-Tipton 2 Year Old Sale to be held May 23-24 in Timonium, Maryland.  It will likely be the last chance for those of you who are interested in purchasing a share in a two year old horse Group this year.  We intend to purchase horses to add to the stable, but only if we can get them at a reasonable price and maybe strike gold like the Derby winner Rich Strike (see some comments from Robb below in red).  Please let us know if you want to be included in receiving additional information about the sale, as we already have many on our priority list and expect any purchases to sell out rapidly.  In addition, all current and former Group Members please keep the morning of Saturday May 28th open as we are planning a get together and a chance to see your horses in person at Monmouth Park.  Details to follow next week.

A HUGE congratulations to all the connections of Rich Strike, how wonderful to see ‘little guys’ take home one of the greatest prizes in racing. A few ‘teachable moments’ from this shocking upset’…

  1. This horse was claimed last September for $30,000 (from famed owner Calumet Farm). If ever you wanted proof of something I’ve been saying for literally decades, that you can get ANY kind of horse out of a claiming race, this is it. It wasn’t the first time a horse that ran for a claiming tag earlier in its career won the Kentucky Derby and it won’t be the last. Horses change dramatically, especially from age 2 to 3, champion two year olds frequently fail to hold their form at three, while average two year olds mature into champions.
  2. It doesn’t happen every day, but you don’t need to spend a fortune for royally bred horses at public auction to win the biggest races. Is Rich Strike the best three year old this year? Time will tell, probably not, but he’s proof winners of grade one stakes come from everywhere.
  3. If ever the saying ‘pace makes the race’ proved true, this was it. The early pace was absolutely insane, faster than champion Jackie’s Warrior ran in a 7 furlong sprint two races earlier. The race was set up for a deep closer from far off the pace with a clean trip.
  4. Can’t say I would have picked this horse in a million years, but note he broke his maiden at Churchill by 17 lengths last September. ‘Horses for courses’ is a vastly underrated handicapping tool, note how many races today were won by horses with previous wins at Churchill Downs.
  5. Whether it’s claiming, or buying moderately priced horses at sales, you can end up with incredible results without spending millions of dollars. That’s exactly what makes this game so great!
