General News

A lot of news to report from the past week.  Shares in both of our new Horse Groups have sold quickly and we are down to the last few available shares.  There are just two 5% shares available in the Flameaway / Livermore Valley 21 Colt Group 93  and just four 5% shares available in the Mitole / Lilacs and Lilies filly Group 94.  Both horses worked 1/8 of a mile in 10.0 seconds on the Ocala Training Track prior to the sale and we were able to purchase them for bargain prices.  This is the final opportunity of the year to join in a Kenwood Racing Horse Group and if you want to get in on the action, please contact Scott or myself ASAP.

Important: Save the date of Sunday August 27 for the Annual Kenwood Picnic at Monmouth Park during the NJ Thoroughbred Festival.  Details to follow early in August.

  • Brit's Candyman started us off for the week with a hard trying 3rd last Wednesday night at Penn National.  Rider Tyler Conner said he felt good the entire way, but just could not get past the winner in the stretch.  He has shown his versatility finishing well on both dirt and turf over the last few weeks.  He has come out of the race in good order and we are looking to get him back in the entries as soon as a race is available.
  • Red Head Italian provided some fireworks on Friday in front of a large contingent of Group Members and their families as she sped to the lead out of the gate in her debut.  I have paraphrased Scott’s post- race review here as it covers all the action.

What an exciting race yesterday for RED HEAD ITALIAN’S career debut, just getting nosed out at the wire by another first-time starter for the win! While we certainly would have liked the win, it is hard to be too disappointed in her effort and the outcome.  She was the first to load into the gate and had zero issues getting loaded and set, but unfortunately almost every other horse had problems loading, with the entire process taking about 3-4 more minutes while she waited patiently for the start.  Acting like a true professional throughout she broke cleanly and got right to the lead as planned, with continued pace pressure from the eventual winner just to her outside.  She was confronted by the winner at the top of the stretch, but battled on gamely the entire stretch drive, while exchanging leads a couple times, before just getting beat at the wire by a short neck!  She came out of the race well according to trainer Kelly Breen.  Our partner Jeremy Rosen (Racing Manager for RJR Racing) reported that she looked good, jogged sound, and cleaned up the feed tub Saturday morning.  Her 2nd place finish brought a respectable $14,375 in earnings with the lucrative NJ Bred purses, and since she still keeps her Maiden condition, she will be eligible to run right back on July 21st in a five furlong NJ Bred MSW race for the same large purse.  The Equibase Race Chart is attached above for your review, where her full note tells the story perfectly – “RED HEAD ITALIAN showed good speed on the inside to set the pace, dueled into the stretch, dug in gamely on the rail in the final sixteenth and battled to the end.”

  • Montauk Summer  is entered in the seventh race on Friday at Monmouth Park going a mile and a sixteenth on the turf in a full field nine with multiple also eligibles and MTO entries as well.  He will need to be in top form to capture the Winner’s share of the large 60K purse, but trainer - partner Kelly Breen feels that he has been training exceptionally well and deserves a shot in here.  Jose Gomez will be in the irons for Group 90 ARC23.  We expect a large number of the Kenwood family to attend so please let us know ASAP if you need admission passes.
  • Boston Princess is well after her trip up from Florida and was entered in a Starter allowance at Belmont for Saturday that didn’t go. The race was brought back for Sunday, but she was not selected as one of the entries.  We are actively looking for a spot for her on the turf at Monmouth or any other Northeast Tracks in the next week or so.
  • U Kant Whip It was entered for a turf sprint at Laurel, but the race was not carded and we are diligently looking for a spot for him as well.  He had a maintenance breeze last Wednesday and is ready to go.

  • Ellie's a Riot has been retired from race training as a series of physical setbacks have made it a better choice to give her a career as a Broodmare rather than a Racehorse.  With her sparkling pedigree we hope that she will bring in some nice $$’s for our Group 83 Members in one of the Sales this fall.
  • Lisa Limon in foal with a colt to Practical Joke and her offspring are well at Hidden Brook Farm.  Here’s video of our Vino Rosso filly walking last Thursday morning at Hidden Brook Farm in Kentucky.
