Let’s salute a person from the past, jockey Julie Krone. When I first starting going to Monmouth Park she was always one of the leading riders. It used to be her and Joe Bravo battling it out to be top rider for the racing meet. She had 20,000 lifetime mounts, 3,500 winners and won $81 million in purses and has a place in the Thoroughbred Racing Hall Of Fame. Krone was the only woman to win riding championships at Belmont Park, Gulfstream Park, Monmouth Park, The Meadowlands and the Atlantic City Race Course. She also was the first woman to win a Triple Crown Race in 1993 aboard Colonial Affair in the Belmont Stakes.

I am not afraid to admit at the time I was rooting for her as the underdog in a male dominated sport. I am sure there were many opportunities for getting mounts that she was passed over when she first started. I used to bet on her as the jockey and came home a winner many a times, so maybe I am bit jaded in my opinion of her. I think we need more role models for women like Julie Krone, that pursued what she loved and was successful.  Go with your love and passions in life- whether if it is the love of horse racing or another endeavor. So Julie we salute you for your achievements in the horse racing industry and being a role model for other women riders.
