The article, The Week in Review: How to Buy a Derby Winner for $1,000, from TDN (Thoroughbred Daily News) May 2nd speaks for itself and is really worth reading. This year’s Kentucky Derby winner was purchased for $1,000 as a yearling and re-sold as a two-year-old at OBS (the same venue where Kenwood Racing buys most of our two year olds) for $35,000. This is why we buy horses that offer value; good physical individuals that move well with solid but not fancy pedigrees that have a shot to really pay off. We don’t mark up horses and invest our own $ in every horse we purchase right along side our valued co-owners. Last year, our co-owners paid $40,000 for Fire’s Finale and $22,000 for Tracy Ann’s Legacy, both quality stakes horses that have been highly profitable already, with (hopefully) a lot more to come for each of them. A lot better investment than the $500,000 ++ people paid for the also rans in this year’s race (even aside from any markups).
