Action heats up with Gulfstream claims, win
for Cloud of Smoke and good seconds by three horses.....
The
weather has been ice cold in all the mid-Atlantic states this winter but after a
very cold start ourselves, things are heating up for Kenwood. Our first win of
the new year came on March 3rd, when Cloud of Smoke journeyed from her
Philadelphia Park home base to Penn National and won going away against lower
level claimers under a fine ride by old friend Rodrigo Madrigal, who won
many races for us when he was based at Philly Park. Trained by our Philadelphia
based trainer Steve (Snapper) Mick, Cloud of Smoke was well back for most
of the race in a ground saving rail trip, made a bold move on the far turn and
won going away by almost three lengths. It was her second career win and first
since her layoff last year. Previously, on February 2nd she came back on just one week rest and finished
3rd at Philly Park in her first opportunity at her preferred distance since her
return from the lengthy layoff. On January 26th she was a closing 4th, beaten about 3 lengths
for the win which was a major improvement off her first start on January 10th
when she finished 7th of 10 horses.
She appears to have rounded into good form now and if she continues to
improve as she has each race thus far, we'll be in good shape to pick up more nice purses
with her this spring.
Perhaps even better news than Cloud of Smoke's win was an
exceptionally good effort by Annabill at Gulfstream Park on March 5th,
when she finished a close second in a very tough allowance event as the longest
shot on the board, beaten by a short length in the final strides by the
overwhelming favorite in the race, who had a perfect trip throughout and just
did manage to get past Annabill in the final strides. The race was particularly
impressive in that it was her first start back off a layoff of nearly four
months and came at a distance much shorter than she usually runs at. But none of
that mattered to Annabill, who pranced into the paddock sharp, eager, and ready
and ran a bang up effort in her comeback. It was very heartening to see, as she
had run a terrible race in her previous start, when 8th of 9 horses in the
$200,000 Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap at Calder Racecourse on November 14th.
Off that race, we gave her a brief freshening even though there was nothing
physically wrong with her, and it appears to have paid off for us. With this
race under her belt, she appears poised for a very productive spring/summer for
us. Previously on October
16th Annabill was a flying second, beaten a short
nose (literally less than an inch!) for the win at The Meadowlands, her first
really good race for us after several moderately disappointing races (3rd, 4th,
5th) against top stakes company. We think we have this classy veteran multiple
stakes winning mare ready for her best effort now!
On March
7th Gianna's Reprized ran well and caught a nice break when a
flying 3rd at Philadelphia Park, coming from dead last in an 11 horse field to
be beaten just 1/2 length for the win. In another two strides she would have
won, but she did receive a bit of redemption as the second horse was
disqualified for cutting off another runner, moving Gianna up to second. On
February 13th she was a closing 3rd at Philly Park in
another honest effort.
This filly is a proven grass runner competing
on dirt, so we think she has every reason to improve come spring when grass racing returns to the mid-Atlantic
region.
On March 6th
Memorized
turned in a much
improved effort when 3rd at Penn National against lower level claiming runners.
He was beaten just over 3 lengths for the win but was almost 8 lengths ahead of
the rest of the bulky 12 horse field and ran a decent race. Memorized had returned from Gulfstream
Park in Florida to cooler climates at Philly Park with trainer Steve Mick and
his first start since his return north was a disappointing 6th when he never
picked his feet up on a sloppy track that was the cause of his sub-par effort.
We think this
horse is good enough to run well for trainer Steve Mick at Philadelphia Park in
lower level claiming races with larger purses the rest of the winter and into
the spring.
Previously at snow covered Philadelphia Park, Longandstrong, a very honest runner
who rarely turns in a bad race, was a very game second on Valentine's day, the birthday of Kenwood
Racing partner Elena Levinsky. Sent right to the front by jockey Joe
Rocco he led early, was challenged and passed by two runners at the top
of the stretch, and came again to regain the lead inside the eighth pole only to
fall just over a length short of the winner in the final strides. Previously
on January 16th he finished a closing third, while on new years day
he ran very well but
finished a frustrating 4th, beaten just 2 lengths for the win and less than a
length for second but none the less, failing to hit the board. Longandstrong had two wins
at Philly Park last fall, taking home the winners share of
$30,000 and $45,000 purses, thus earning
considerably more than his $20,000 purchase price in a very short time.
On the same day as
Longandstrong was running at Philly Park Kenwood was also in action at
Gulfstream, with managing partner H. Robb Levinsky and trainer
Steve DiMauro looking at several possible claims. When the dust cleared, we
dropped a claim slip for the very consistent runner Straight Count in the
6th race at Gulfstream and watched him win his second in a row in impressive
style. The problem was, we were not the only one who saw value here, as seven
other owners also put in a claim for him. However, luck was on our side today as
we won an eight way shake to finish a good day on a good note, with a second at
Philly for Longandstrong and the claim of an very attractive new horse to
celebrate partner Elena Levinsky's birthday in style!
While it
took a little longer than usual this season to come up with some attractive
horses to claim, things got busy as February progressed. On February 15th, we
claimed two interesting three year old maidens, including a nicely bred colt
named Exposed Image, and a filly named Granny Mac.
Both horses came out of their respective races in fine shape, and we are
expecting their first starts for us to come in March at Gulfstream Park. Then on February 25th we made a very exciting
addition to our barn with the claim of Cuba. If that is a familiar name
to many of our readers, it's because Cuba is one of the greatest New Jersey bred
runners in history, who has competed against our own stable star Hermosillo
a number of times over the past two years. Cuba looks to be in great shape and
ready for another winning season in New Jersey in 2010. Now he joins our barn as
Hermosillo's stable mate, and if things go according to plan he'll give us quite
a one-two punch in New Jersey bred races this year!
On February 19th,
Halfbetterthannone was last of 9 runners in a 5 furlong sprint on the grass
at Gulfstream Park. On January 31st she was a flying 5th in the same kind of
race, her first time sprinting on the grass, so we had expected a much better
effort 2nd time out in a sprint. Instead she stopped badly in the stretch after
being well placed early. This is a horse with an odd running style who does her
best running from well back behind a wall of horses. This filly had a very good year for us in 2009.
On
September 24th she followed up two big wins with another huge effort, finishing
a game 2nd beaten just 1/2 length for the win and well ahead of the other
runners at 15 to 1 odds in a very tough allowance event at Monmouth. In her
previous start Halfbetterthannone followed up Hermosillo's fireworks in the
Charles Hesse Handicap when she took home her second win in a row on August
27th, just four days after Hermosillo's big win.
Her August 27th win came at a great time, as Kenwood managing partner H. Robb
Levinsky was speaking before the
New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners that afternoon at Monmouth.
Perhaps it was the loud cheers from the group that helped Halfbetterthannone
mount a huge rally in the stretch to win going away. After the race nearly 100
people crowded into the winners circle with the Kenwood team to celebrate, pose
for photos, and accept a nice trophy with Robb, Kenwood partner
Charlie Spiler, trainer Steve DiMauro, and jockey Elvis Trujillo.
It was truly a memorable day for everyone. Kenwood would like to say a special
THANK YOU to Carol Heller, one of the Presidents of the Monmouth/Ocean
Chapter of the Women Business Owners for inviting Robb to speak and sharing a
great afternoon with the Kenwood crew!
On January 21st
Secret Envoy
was 8th of 12 horses in a Gulfstream park maiden grass event. Well back
early, he failed to fire at any point in the race. Previously on
December 18th he finished 7th on a muddy surface he clearly didn't like. On
November 9th he was 4th in a maiden race at The Meadowlands. Last early, he closed
willingly enough but clearly didn't have the kick we expected. We were looking for this
horse to rebound on the grass at Gulfstream in January so his most recent race
was a real disappointment.
We sent Secret Envoy along with Memorized back up north to
trainer Steve Mick at Philadelphia Park, where we think both horse's recent
Florida form will make them a solid fit in less competitive claiming races with larger purses
the rest of the winter and into the spring.
Kenwood on leading owners list at Monmouth
once again in 2009
Thanks in part to a tremendous win at 10 to 1 odds by
Original Sin on the final day of the meet,
Kenwood Racing ended 2009 on the leading owners list for the second
year in a row after a great season of racing at our Monmouth Park home base.
After posting just three wins from the May 9th opening through the
middle of August it seemed impossible that Kenwood would manage to
get anywhere near the ranks of the top stables on the grounds, but a
sizzling summer which saw us win five races in the final 6 weeks of
the meet gave us a total of 8 wins by closing day, September 27th,
good for the 9th or 10th spot on the top ten list (final totals to
be determined). While this was one win less than 2008 when Kenwood
finished in the 6th spot, it was a much better year for us overall
with very similar winning and in-the-money percentages but more
purse income and an unforgettable 6 length, wire to wire victory at
35 to 1 odds by stable star and Kenwood favorite Hermosillo
in the $100,000 Charles Hesse Handicap on August 23rd. This year,
Kenwood ended up with 8 wins, 8 seconds, and 8 thirds (8s were
clearly wild!) from 52 Monmouth starts. Last year (2008) the
meet ended on September 28th with Kenwood ranked 6th on the leading
owners list with a total of 9 wins, 8 seconds and 12 thirds from
57 starts. Our results for both years represent major achievements, especially considering we invested
literally just 10-20% of the capital that the vast majority of our
competitors on Monmouth's top ten list did to achieve similar results. Our management team and the hardworking
crew in trainer Steve DiMauro's barn, including his exceptionally
capable assistant trainer Nick Calati, made more with less, as we
developed
clever claims into some exciting and profitable horses to achieve
these impressive results. Our two New Jersey bred stars from last
year, Hermosillo and Original Sin, were once again our
leading horses and both of them have enjoyed an even better
year in 2009 than they did in 2008. They were joined by a couple of
emerging runners in Halfbetterthannone and Autumn Ash,
each of whom have developed into nice horses already and have a
chance to end up being future stars for us. Both of these well bred,
attractive fillies were claimed for just $20,000 at Gulfstream Park
this winter (by pure coincidence exactly the same price we paid for
Hermosillo and Original Sin last year!) and are already worth
considerably more then that. These horses and others gave our
partners and friends plenty to cheer about all season long at
beautiful Monmouth Park.
Top Kenwood runners preparing for 2010
campaigns...
Our leading horses from a very successful 2009 racing season
all received a little well deserved R&R at T-Square Stud in Ocala, Florida this
winter and are being prepared for their return to the races this spring.
Hermosillo and Autumn Ash are doing great and
should be ready for lots of racing and visits to the winners circle in 2010.
Autumn Ash is in training at T-Square Stud now and should join Steve's barn at
Gulfstream by the beginning of March, with her first start of the year expected
in April. Hermosillo will be pointed for Monmouth Park in May as he's a New
Jersey bred and we want him nice and fresh to dance all the possible dances in
New Jersey from May - November once again. Both horses closed out their
2009 season in November, a month when
Kenwood celebrated wins by four different
horses, including a victory on November 24th in a tough feature allowance event
by Hermosillo. Sent off the shocking 6
to 1 long shot in the compact but highly competitive four horse field,
Hermosillo went right to the front and repelled repeated bids by top runners
Easy Gallop and Dubinsky to win going away under a picture perfect ride by
regular rider Pedro Cotto, Jr. Including a generous 40% New Jersey bred
bonus, Hermosillo picked up the 60% winners share of a $67,000+ purse to push
his earnings for year over the $150,000 mark while putting Kenwood's gross purse
income for 2009 to date right at the $550,000 mark, amazing numbers for a stable
of our size. The win was our 17th of the year, equaling the the number
of wins we had for all of 2008 when we made 143 starts, compared to just
105 starts through November of 2009).
On October 12th, sent off
at a surprising 8 to 1 odds despite finishing 1st and second in two stakes in
his last two starts (proving both the quality of the field he was facing and the
fact that he continues to get no respect from betters despite his
accomplishments) Hermosillo went right to the front under regular rider Pedro
Cotto Jr. Pressed on the backstretch by fellow long shot Southern
Rainbow, it looked like both horses were certain to tire from the duel that
quickly developed, setting up the race for the closers. Instead the two horses
continued to battle nose to nose for the entire final quarter mile of the race,
with Hermosillo finally coming out on the short end of a head bobbing nose at
the wire. "It was one of the most amazing and courageous races I've seen in
nearly 30 years in the business" said Kenwood managing partner H. Robb
Levinsky, who has witnessed literally thousands of races during that time.
"It reminded me of watching Affirmed and Alydar go nose to nose for the
final half mile of the Belmont Stakes 30 years ago. I was there for that race,
and while obviously that was a historic contest between two of the greatest
hordes of modern times, Hermosillo's race evoked the some feeling of watching
two horses run as a team for the entire final half of the race, each refusing to
give an inch while running away from the rest of the field. It was a
heartbreaking defeat but one for the ages for Kenwood". The race proved (if
there was any doubt beforehand) that Hermosillo is one of the top horses in the
state, and perhaps more. The race was run in a sizzling 1:34.56 for the mile,
just 0.40 seconds off the track record.
Hermosillo showed his win in the $100,000 Charles
Hesse Handicap at Monmouth Park on August 23rd was no fluke as he came
back to run an exceptionally game second in the $60,000 Lincroft Handicap at
Monmouth on September 13th. Once again, jockey Pedro Cotto sent 'Herman'
right to the front and he maintained a narrow advantage under confident handling
until the far turn, when favored At the Disco ranged up alongside. Instead of
giving way from his early efforts, Hermosillo fought back bravely, even putting
his head back in front inside the 16th pole before finally tiring a bit in the
final strides to finish second, beaten about 1 length for the win and way clear
of the third horse.
Kenwood Racing has a long history of winning major stakes
races at huge odds with horses purchased for very modest prices, but
Hermosillo's runaway 6 length win in the $100,000 Charles
Hesse Handicap at Monmouth Park on August 23rd at odds of 35 to 1 might just be our greatest
feat of all. While the betting public was shocked by his victory, we were not
really surprised, as Hermosillo had trained exceptionally well into the race and
was clearly a talented horse on the improve. This incredibly honest and hard
trying runner showed immediate promise from the day we claimed him and we managed his career with an eye towards
developing him into a stakes horse for the lucrative New Jersey bred stakes
program. Under careful handling by Kenwood's main trainer, Steve DiMauro
at Monmouth Park (with a helping hand from trainer Steve (Snapper) Mick,
Kenwood's Philadelphia Park based trainer who prepared him for his initial
starts each of the past two springs, as well as Adam Parker at T-Square Stud,
where Hermosillo and many other Kenwood runners have enjoyed some well deserved
R&R and loving care each winter
to have them rested and ready for Monmouth's may opening) Hermosillo has
made the transition from claiming horse to allowance winner to placing in
stakes, and finally now to winning the biggest race of the year on the New
Jersey bred stakes calendar. Sent right to
the lead by jockey Pedro Cotto Jr. as per instructions in the paddock
from Kenwood managing partner H. Robb Levinsky, Hermosillo set a lively
pace while being pressed hard by the speedy sprinter Rough Road Ahead. Despite
the pressure Hermosillo opened a sizable lead on the far turn and incredibly,
rather than tiring from his early efforts, continued to draw away from the field
in the stretch, coming home an easy and impressive winner over a top class field
in the feature race on New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival day. It was a win for
the ages, shared by all the Kenwood partners and friends nationwide, including
partners Allen J. Katz, Linda Quinlan, and
Charlie & Jodi Spiler who were on hand at Monmouth with managing partner
Robb Levinsky and trainer Steve DiMauro to cheer Hermosillo on to victory and
pose in the winners circle for a historic photo with another beautiful stakes
trophy for the Kenwood office. It was the first time Allen Katz, a Kenwood
Partner of many years who lives in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, was able to witness
a stakes victory in person. "These are the days you live for", Allen stated on
the drive to the airport for his flight home the following day. Hermosillo was
the first horse partners Charlie & Jodi Spiler, who joined the Kenwood family as
partners last year, ever posed in the winners circle with when he won a nice
allowance race at Monmouth last June, a race that stamped him as a horse with
real potential. Meanwhile, partner Linda Quinlan has been on hand from her home
in Vermont three times this year, once in Florida and twice in New Jersey, and
every time has posed for a picture in the winners circle (in March with
Babylonian, in June with Original Sin, and now with Hermosillo on
one of our greatest days). Steve DiMauro's assistant trainer Nick Calati,
a great guy who quietly does a great job, afterwards stated "Linda's really good
luck, she needs to come back for all the big races!". A sound, talented New
Jersey bred stakes horse is a very special (and financially lucrative) gift for
any racing stable, and we hope Hermosillo will be winning races for us for many
years to come!
On November 20th, Autumn Ash set her
sights on some black type in the $60,000 Honey Bee Stakes at The Meadowlands.
While it was undoubtedly a huge jump in class for an honest three year old filly
who has run some good races and made money for us this year but not shown
herself to be of stakes quality, we felt it was worth a try as her outstanding
pedigree means any stakes placing adds a great deal to her residual breeding
value. Sent off the longest shot on the board in a bulky 10 horse field, she
gave it her best shot but was simply overmatched, finishing 8th. It was worth a
try in one of the last stakes for three year old fillies remaining this year and
we have no regrets. As mentioned above, 'Ash' joined stable star Hermosillo at T-Square Stud in Ocala,
Florida for some well deserved R&R this winter. We are hoping the time off will
help her mature into a really good horse in 2010, just as it did with
Hermosillo last winter.
We paid just $20,000 for this filly and
she earned almost $40,000 for us in 2009 while running well against much better
horses all year long.
One of her breeders, Don Smith from Grandvue
Farm in Kentucky called us after her first race for Kenwood and told us a lot about
her history. Autumn Ash had a rough start to life as her dam died
just 9 hours after foaling her, but she was tough and has developed
into a very nice filly. Don sent us some great photos of Autumn
Ash as a baby, one of which is shown here. Don and his wife Susie
are following her career closely.

Autumn Ash as a baby, beautiful from the start!

First new claims of
the year...
It took a bit longer than usual this year, but Kenwood finally
found a good horse to claim at Gulfstream Park, winning an 8 way shake for
Straight Count in the 6th race on February 14th, the birthday of Kenwood
partner Elena Levinsky. No doubt Elena brought us the good luck we needed to win
an 8 way shake for a very honest and consistent runner who won his second in a
row at Gulfstream in impressive front running style. We think this horse will be
an exciting addition to our barn both at Gulfstream this winter and hopefully at
Monmouth Park as well this spring.
We came up
with two more claims on February 15th, purchasing the three year old maidens
Exposed Image for $25,000 and Granny Mac for $12,500. Then on
February 25th we made perhaps our most exciting claim of the year, taking New
Jersey bred star Cuba for $32,000, the very same Cuba who was third to
our star Hermosillo in the $100,000 Charles Hesse Handicap last year. All four
horses came out of their respective races in fine shape, and we are expecting
their first starts for us to come in March. We have our eyes on other possible
claims and expect to add more horses to our stable soon.
Exchanging Fire loses first foal, will be bred back to champion Holy Bull...
In a sad and shocking development, Exchanging Fire
gave birth to a stillborn colt on February 25th. The news was
stunning as she had been doing very well all year and showed no
signs that anything was wrong throughout her pregnancy. Exchanging
Fire was bred to Thunder Gulch
on March 11, one of the top proven
sires in Kentucky, for her initial breeding in 2009 and was
pronounced in foal on March 26th, 2009. This was obviously
unexpected and very sad news, and the entire Kenwood family mourns
the loss of her first foal. Fortunately, 'Fire' herself seems fine
and there is no indication this was anything other than a freak
occurrence, which happens occasionally, especially with maiden
mares. Assuming all is well over the next few days, Exchanging Fire will be vanned back
to Kentucky to be bred to another great racehorse and sire, champion
Holy Bull. We are giving 'Fire' an opportunity to become a
really great producer by breeding her to quality Kentucky sires who
should compliment her wonderful physical appearance, winning
personality on and off the track, and great race record. Holy Bull was a champion racehorse and has been a
successful and profilic Kentucky sire perennially on the national
leading sires list. A Pennsylvania
bred foal out of a stakes winning mare by a leading Kentucky sire
will be a highly saleable commodity indeed if the foal is
attractive. Each year, we will decide if we want to sell her foals
or keep and race them ourselves.
As everyone knows, Exchanging Fire had a wonderful racing career. Claimed for $50,000 in
March of 2007, she rapidly developed under the care of trainer Steve DiMauro in
Florida and then with trainer Steve Mick at Philadelphia Park into a triple
stakes winner, earning nearly $250,000 with five wins and four seconds
from twenty starts under Kenwood silks. After a win first time out for us at
Gulfstream for Steve DiMauro and then another win at Philly Park in a nice
allowance event in her debut with Steve Mick, Exchanging Fire stunned the
betting public and established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the Without Feathers Stakes on June 23rd
of 2007. Sent off at 29 to 1 odds, 'Fire' made
a mockery of a solid field, drawing
away turning for home and extending her margin to 5&3/4
lengths at the wire with a winning time of 135.05
was just 1.25 seconds off the track record.
Her next start was the Serena's Song Stakes, where
she was sent off the 3
to 1 third choice on July 21st and proved her first impressive stakes win
was no fluke, winning by 2&3/4 lengths over a highly competitive
field. Away alertly under Jockey Eddie King, Exchanging Fire quickly took
command and kept the other speed horses at bay in the early going
while setting exceptionally fast early fractions of 22.08, 45.28
and 109.57.
Off those two exceptionally impressive performances, 'Fire'
headed for the $200,000 Grade III Monmouth Oaks on August 22nd where she went
off the 3 to 2 favorite. However, a sea of mud led to a surface not to her
liking and resulted in a 4th place finish, losing to a couple of the horses she
had beaten previously and failing to gain graded "black type" for finishing in
the top three in a graded stake. We felt she had a legitimate excuse in that
race and kept with our game plan, running next in the $750,000 Fitz Dixon
Cotillion at her home track, Philadelphia Park on September 22nd. Here she faced
some of the top 3 year old fillies in the country and finished 5th in an honest
effort with no excuse except being a bit overmatched.
Off that effort we naturally looked for a softer spot to get her
back into the winners circle and on October 5th Exchanging Fire proved she was capable of beating
proven older stakes horses with an easy, wire to wire victory in
the $60,000 Honey Bee Stakes at the Meadowlands. It was another
impressive effort under Jockey Eddie King, who again rode her perfectly
to beat a solid field while posting her third stakes win in 2007.
In 2008, Exchanging Fire was only able to post a couple of
seconds in eight starts, and headed to the breeding shed for 2009. Overall
it was a great run on the track with a horse who helped put Kenwood Racing on the map at
Monmouth Park and provided all of our partners with a great year of thrills,
trophies, money and memories! Having won the $200,000 California Derby with Prime Meridian at
odds of 16 to 1, the $100,000 Golden Poppy Handicap with Puerto
Plata at odds of 11 to 1, and the Without Feathers Stakes with Exchanging
Fire at 29 to 1, Kenwood has proven that we are one of the best
at developing modestly priced horses into quality stakes performers
anywhere we race. Now, our partners look forward to watching her produce homebred runners for us!
Farm Notes...
Autumn Ash and stable star Hermosillo are
enjoying a
nice winter vacation at T- Square Stud in Ocala, Florida. Last winter
Hermosillo and Original Sin both wintered there and came back in great shape and
turned in great seasons for us, and we are expecting the time off to do both
horses a world of good this winter. They will be returned to light training at
T- Square Stud in February after a couple months of well deserved R&R and then be
shipped to Philadelphia Park in early April where trainer Steve Mick will get
them started on what we hope will be very successful 2010 campaigns.

Granny Mac, 2007 filly, Forest Camp - Romantic
Reason . Purchased on February 15, 2010. Owned by Kenwood Racing.
Comment: Three year old filly bred
for speed, an attractive prospect.
Cuba, 2001 horse, Not For Love - Shaunlee Purchased on February
25, 2010. Owned by Kenwood Racing.
Comment: One of the greatest New
Jersey breds ever, 3rd to Hermosillo in last year's $100,000 Hesse
Handicap. Now joins the Kenwood barn as Hermosillo's stable mate.
Could give us a great one two punch in New Jersey bred stakes this
year.
